India Art, Architecture & Design Biennale 2023 @ Red Fort

A Celebration of Creativity and Heritage

In a groundbreaking initiative, the Ministry of Culture is set to unfold the grand canvas of India’s artistic heritage through the India Art, Architecture & Design Biennale 2023 (IAADB’23) at the iconic Red Fort. Scheduled to be inaugurated on the 8th of December 2023, this biennale promises to be a global platform that celebrates the diverse and vibrant tapestry of the country’s art, architecture, and design.

The week-long event, commencing on the 9th of December, will be open to the public and feature a rich array of exhibitions, panel discussions, workshops, and an art bazaar. What makes this event truly exceptional is its commitment to bridging the gap between ancient traditions, modern influences, contemporary expressions, and cutting-edge technological advancements in the realm of art and design.

Smt. Meenakashi Lekhi, Minister of State for Culture and External Affairs, highlighted the innovative nature of IAADB’23 during a curtain raiser press conference. She emphasized the inclusive nature of the biennale, bringing together traditional artisans, contemporary designers, curators, and thought leaders under one roof. The event is a testament to India’s rich cultural heritage, spanning not only the ancient and modern but also embracing the tech-driven dimensions of art, architecture, and design.

The pavilions set up as part of the biennale will remain on display until the 31st of March 2024, offering an extended opportunity for enthusiasts and art connoisseurs to delve into the multifaceted facets of India’s cultural legacy. Inspired by the Prime Minister’s vision to establish cultural spaces across the nation, including one at the Red Fort, IAADB’23 aims to establish itself as a prominent global cultural event, joining the ranks of renowned biennales in Venice, Sao Paulo, and Dubai.

The event is meticulously curated, with seven esteemed curators leading visitors through a captivating journey exploring different aspects of India’s rich cultural heritage. From “Pravesh,” which delves into the symbolism of doors and gateways, to “Vismaya,” a celebration of post-independence architectural splendor, each pavilion promises a unique and immersive experience.

Notably, the Ministry invited artists and curators to submit their work for IAADB’23 through an open call on social media, receiving an overwhelming response with 260 submissions. The selected 150 entries will be showcased at the venue, reflecting the diversity and dynamism of the contemporary Indian art scene.

In alignment with the biennale’s commitment to inclusivity, a Student Biennale is set to take place from the 9th of December at the Lalit Kala Akademi. This initiative provides a platform for emerging talent to showcase their creativity and imagination, fostering a dialogue between established and budding artists.

IAADB’23 is poised to be a unique event that not only celebrates the artistic heritage of India but also serves as a catalyst for mobilizing the community of artists and designers. By providing a platform for both established and emerging talents, the biennale seeks to energize cultural and creative industries, fostering a meaningful dialogue among practitioners in art, architecture, and design.

As the pavilions stand tall against the backdrop of the historic Red Fort, IAADB’23 is not just an event; it is a celebration of creativity, a testament to India’s rich cultural legacy, and a bridge connecting the past, present, and future of art, architecture, and design. It is an invitation for students, parents, and educators to immerse themselves in a world where tradition meets innovation, and where the vibrant colours of India’s artistic tapestry come alive on a global stage.
