Our Digital Footprints What We Leave Behind Online

(This topic was discussed with students during the Guest Speaker session conducted by Dr. Arun, where children shared their experiences and thoughts about being responsible in the digital world.)

In today’s fast-moving digital world, children grow up connected — chatting, posting, sharing, liking. But each of these small actions leaves a lasting mark. Just like footprints in wet sand, our online actions tell a story about who we are and what we value. And unlike sand, the digital world does not have waves to wash everything away.

Have you ever walked on a sandy beach? Each step you take leaves a mark — a footprint. After some time, waves may wash it away, but for a while, it stays there for everyone to see.
That’s exactly what happens when you use the internet. Every photo you post, every comment you write, every “like” you give — they all become part of your digital footprint.

Now, you might think, “I’m just a kid! Who’s even looking?”
But here’s the surprise — many people are!

When you grow up and apply for a college, a job, or even a visa to travel, companies and officers often check what kind of person you seem to be online. They may scroll through your old posts, see what pages you follow, and even what jokes you share.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) can now find things you thought were long forgotten — even deleted posts or old photos that were once shared somewhere.

Let’s take an example.
Riya, a bright student, once wrote a few angry comments under a YouTube video when she was 11. She forgot all about it.
Years later, when she applied for a scholarship abroad, someone noticed those comments. It didn’t “cancel” her, but it did raise questions. Riya had to explain that she had changed and learned from her mistake. She wished she had thought twice before typing.

Being responsible online doesn’t mean you should stop using the internet. It means you should use it wisely — just like wearing a helmet when you ride a cycle.
Here’s how:

  1. Think before you post. If you wouldn’t say it aloud to your teacher or parents, don’t post it online.
  2. Don’t overshare. Your home address, school name, and travel plans are personal — keep them safe.
  3. Be kind. Words on screens can still hurt hearts.
  4. Check your privacy settings. Make sure only friends can see your personal updates.
  5. Be a good digital citizen. The internet remembers your choices — make sure they show your best side.

Your digital footprint is like your shadow — it always follows you. Make it one you’re proud of.

Remember:

“The internet has a long memory — but we have the power to decide what it remembers about us.”

So, as you explore this exciting digital world, walk wisely, post thoughtfully, and let your footprints — both real and virtual — shine with kindness, curiosity, and character.
